Manchester Central is formerly known as G-Mex and the International Convention Centre. This consolidation project will form better links between all existing spaces as well as providing vastly improved facilities.
Sensitivity of the interface between old and new is critical. The roof lights not only create an appropriate architectural language of separation between old and new and providing dramatic views of the listed structure and beyond, they also provide the much needed daylight into the space. The much reduced height of the proposed entrance hall maximises external views of the listed façade whilst a transparent elevation connects the internal and external spaces, animating the facility during key events.
