chester zoo

The design forms part of an ambitious 120 bed four star hotel for Chester Zoo located within their African Savannah Sector. The design concept echoes African vernacular architecture, which is characterised by a curved timber grid shell structure that integrates the hotel into the landscape. The hotel design aims to promote bio-diversity and assist in breaking the visual thresholds between humans and the natural world. All of the hotel rooms are designed with balconies overlooking the animals to underpin George Mottershead’s vision of a “zoo without bars”.
