The project is a new home for Bolton Music Service, which provides music teaching and performance to local secondary schools within the area. The service dates back to the mid-20th Century and is an important asset to providing music education to the local youth.
We have focused our design proposal on the industrial character of Bolton and the original settlement of Flemish weavers. Using a limited palette of bold materials combining steel, Flemish brick, rough shuttered concrete and glass. Bold spaces and robust forms will also contribute to this industrial atmosphere.
The form outside is a direct expression of the inside. The deep reveals emphasise the main protagonist spaces inside and strengthen the carved solidity of the external form.
The building is organised around two performance spaces, a 400 seat Concert Hall and a 300 capacity rock venue. Various size practice spaces are located in a tower on the corner of the plot.
