This project involved careful restoration of an early Victorian building in knott mill for a furniture showroom. Stripping out and cleaning of the interior revealed a wall made of large sandstone blocks which have indications of machinery mountings and holes for drive shafts, etc.
The new plan required the spaces on both sides of this wall to be unified, so all parts of the wall which were in brick were removed, leaving an apparently random pattern of large blocks.
The rest of the renovation was based on the principle of minimum intervention to reveal layers of the history through to the present showroom function.
